In 1991, Robyn Brown-Samra took the first step towards realizing her dream of owning her own business. The logical first step was to open a booth at a flea market. In her words, "...as a Jewish kid from Jersey, I was pretty much raised on pickles and bagels. I felt confident pickles would be a runaway seller." After several months of research and pickle-tasting Robyn teamed up with the legendary Gus's Pickles®* in New York City and Pickle-Licious - home of "pickle-on-a-stick" - was born. Years later, Brown-Samra parted ways with Gus, and with the help of her parents and brother began pushing pickles all over the tri-state area. It wasn't long before she ventured out into the street fairs, where she began building a loyal clientele in New York. Robyn recalls, "Customers used to tell us that they walked up and down the street fair salivating, searching desperately for our booth. We sold out every single weekend."
Business was going so well that Brown-Samra expanded by operating a mail-order pickle business out of her home. In order to meet the public's increasing demand, she eventually opened a retail store at 580 Amsterdam Avenue on the corner of 88th St in New York City. The store was a huge success and was featured in numerous books and publications including:
"New York Magazine"
"New York Times"
"The Daily News"
"The Guide to the West 80's"
"Ed Levine's Eats"
But Pickle-Licious's fame does not stop with the written word. They have also been featured on the following TV and radio shows:
CNN
MTV's Road Rules
Rosie O'Donnell Show
Live with Emeril
The Joan Hamburg Show
In 2000, Pickle-Licious closed their store in New York City to concentrate on further developing their product line and mail-order business as well as keeping up with the demand of farmer's markets and street fairs.
Robyn Brown-Samra is originally from Fair Lawn, NJ. In addition to founding Pickle-Licious from the ground up, Robyn is the mother of two daughters-Alex, 14, and Taylor, 12. Although her husband and business partner, Leo Samra, passed away unexpectedly in April, Robyn is singlehandedly carrying on the business in his honor. She currently resides in Leonia, NJ where she is continuing to expand the business
We miss you, Leo!
